But it’s not our destination.” Dialogue to Change Toledo is a program that has been used in cities across America since the early 1990s to foster communications among diverse sets of people in hopes of tackling some of society’s more complex problems.
Suggestions were made for prayer walks, picnics, newspaper advertisements, city hall petitions, a book study, concerts, attending a Mud Hens game or other sporting event, potlucks, hosting visiting ministers, playing educational games — even trying to develop a speed-dating type of exercise to help area residents learn a little more about each other’s religion.
Racism: It’s an issue practically as old as religion itself. It is a companion effort to the “Changing Minds and Changing Lives: Combating Racism” speaker series sponsored by the Toledo Community Coalition, Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, the Lucas Metropolitan Housing Authority, the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, the Association of U. Catholic Priests Toledo chapter, the United Way of Greater Toledo, and The Blade.
So perhaps it’s no surprise that a Dialogue to Change group of 20 pastors assigned to put a meaningful dent in Toledo-area racism has collectively taken a step back, called a timeout, and decided to gaze a little deeper into each other’s eyes before trying to put an ambitious community-wide game plan into play. 9 meeting, when they were tasked with coming up with an action plan for addressing racism over the next six to 12 months, the group’s pastors agreed it is best to start with a little more soul-searching among themselves and learn what they’re like while not sitting around a table. Several Dialogue to Change groups were formed in response to a 2013 series of articles in The Blade which described how an ingrained culture of gang activity has pervaded parts of the city.
