However, these behaviors can become abusive and develop into more serious forms of violence.
The repercussions of teen dating violence are impossible to ignore – they hurt not just the young people victimized but also their families, friends, schools and communities.
Throughout February, organizations and individuals nationwide are coming together to highlight the need to educate young people about dating violence, teach healthy relationship skills and prevent the devastating cycle of abuse.
Due to the nature of this issue, the discussion and content will be geared towards high school students.
Everyday, teens and their families struggle with the repercussions of dating violence: lowered achievement, effects of trauma, and continued cycles of violence.
“It can be confusing, especially to teens, what constitutes an unhealthy relationship,” said Dr. “Teens may believe that physical violence, like hitting or kicking, is the singular characteristic of abuse, but it is much more complex.” Like domestic violence — which is any physical, emotional or sexual abuse that happens in a personal relationship — teens from all walks of life are susceptible to dating and relationship violence.
